Odessa will host a festival of opera and ballet

"Velvet Season in the Odessa Opera" 2017 is dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the architectural masterpiece - the Odessa Opera House!


It is one of the oldest theaters in Ukraine, built by drawings of Italian and native masters. This year the festival prepares six performances (one of which is a large-scale premier), concerts on the stage of the theater and open air, events at the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Southern Region as well as in the literary museum. The program also provides interactive lectures with leading ukrainian musicologists.

The grand opening of the festival will take place on September 8 with a concert named "Ukrainian masterpieces for all times". A concert is devoted to the 175th birth anniversary of Mykola Lysenko and consist of the works of Ukrainian composers (conductor - the chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theater of Opera and Ballet of the Republic of Belarus, Honored Artist of Ukraine Viktor Ploskin).

The premierse of the 207th season imlicated works from the golden fund of classical art. Operas "Rustic Chivalry" by Pietro Mascagni and "Pagliacci" by Ruggero Leoncavallo will be performed on September 10 (the conductor - Valery Rehrut) and a ballet "Sleeping Beauty" by Petr Tchaikovsky on September 13 (conductor - Igor Chernetsky). On September 9 the contemporary ballet "Fate" (music by Julia Gomel) will be shown under the direction of conductor Vitaliy Kovalchuk.

The headliner of the festival is a Wagner's "Tannhauser", that will be performed on September 14 under the direction of Oleksandrу Samoyle, the music director and the сhief conductor of ONATOB.


On September 15 at the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Southern Region will be a concert featuring leading solists of the Odessa opera and ballet theatre. On September 16 the guests will be welcome to visit a concert devoted to the 130th anniversary of the Odessa theater building, the architectural masterpiece of F. Fellner and G. Helmer. It will take place in the Odessa literary museum with participation of the 'Viva la Musica' choir (leader - Natalia Kion) fund-owned by Odessa Charitable Foundation "Bavarian House".

The above-mentioned performances ("Tannhäuser" by R. Wagner, "Rustic Chivalry" by P. Mascagni and "Pagliacci" by R. Leoncavallo, "The Fate" by Y. Gomel) will be discussed on interactive lectures with leading ukrainian musicologists.


The musical forum will be completed by two grand gala concerts ("Dedication of the Theater") with world-class stars. The ballet gala will be held on September 15 on the stage of the Odessa theater (conductor - Honored Artist of Ukraine Igor Shavruk). A large operatic gala open-air concert will be held on September 17 under the guidance of Olexandry Samoyle, the music director and the chief conductor of ONATOB.
