Theaters of Ukraine

Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater

Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater was founded in 1920 in Vinnytsia. It moved to Kyiv in 1926. The theater was headed by a prominent director and actor Gnat Yura for more than 40 years. The Academy of Performing Art was created over the years due to his energy. Ukrainian artistic elite, including playwrights, stage designers, and directors, have always considered it to be a great honor to be a part of I. Franko Theater staff alongside Natalya Uzhviy, Amvrosy Buchma, Polina Nyatko, Maryan Krushelnytsky and many other actors who had been creating the theater for decades. Franko Theater has been a laboratory of Ukrainian play starting with the first seasons. The works of most classical authors of Ukrainian drama of the 19th and 20th century were staged at this theater for the first time. Working on the national classical literature has always been one of the general lines of the repertoire. The play “Stolen Happiness” written by Ivan Franko, the patron of the theater, became the trademark of the theater. The production by Gnat Yura in 1940 was the first night of the play. The first night of a new version by Sergei Danchenko was held in 1979, with more than 300 performances both in Ukraine and far beyond the country. The glorified period of the theater development is associated with the name of Sergei Danchenko. He is the one who practically developed the concept of “national theater”: a theater of sublime style, where an obvious theatricality and sophisticated taste occur in a single synthesis with a true nationality. In the course of twenty-three years, Sergei Danchenko made the public discuss Ukrainian theater in the context of the world theater, raised several generations of actors-personalities, of whom national culture boasts nowadays. From 2001 to 2012 the theater was headed by Bogdan Stupka, the artist and the actor of an unlimited range. He invited directors with diametrically opposite artistic principles and theatrical schools to make productions in an effort to expand the artistic palette. Since 2012, the theater has been headed by the People’s Artist of Ukraine, Stanislav Moiseev, who is well-known in Ukraine and abroad. Nowadays, theater performances are presented by such directors as: Petro Ilchenko, Dmitro Chiripyuk, Andriy Prykhodko, Yuriy Odinoky and other masters.

Performances

Morituri te salutant

The modern version is based on the following short stories: “In the tavern”, “All alone”, “Evening hour”, “Christmas Eve”, “May”, “Dream”, “Sons”, “Sin”, “We have a holiday”. They tell everyday stories about parents and children, husband and wife, birth and death, dreams and reality, hard work and eternal hope for the better. Tragic and comical situations intertwine constantly in these stories. The same happens in the real life. There are various events, different characters, but the main thing that unites them is human dignity. A person must stand tall whatever trials are sent by the fate, whatever moral and physical extremes are gone to. You must defy the life even on the threshold of eternity.

The One And Only

Was her desire to sing so desperate that she appeared on numerous stages of America at her own expense? Perhaps, Florence had some inconceivable fluids. Maybe, she had magnetism that fascinated spectators, made them listen to her voice again and again, plunge into the obsession of nature, sweeping the canons of music scores and freely floating among notes. Anyway, but this woman was fantastic, incomprehensible, incomparable. She was the Actress.

Richard The 3rd

One of the main topics for the authors of the performance was the meticulous study of the essence of dangerous and incomprehensible labyrinths of the psychology of a lonely person, humiliated both by nature and by others. There is the dialectics of transforming suffering into criminality and tyranny. Paradoxically, Richard’s disability gives him inner freedom and a whimsical sense of power over people, in the director’s interpretation. Richard is the hermit. He is deprived of real feelings.
